Caddell Construction is a customer-focused general contractor with a clear mission—constructing what matters for the long-term success of employees, clients, and strategic partners. Few companies can match the depth and diversity of Caddell’s portfolio, a reflection of the company’s reputation for taking on difficult and unique construction challenges. Caddell is headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama, with branch offices in metro Atlanta and Northwest Arkansas. Caddell has completed projects totaling more than $12 billion throughout the U.S. and in 34 countries on five continents.
Caddell is a worldwide organization, operating in 34 countries, but they hire through their home office in the US. This made interviewing across time zones a huge challenge. The team aimed to make their hiring process more efficient and flexible for long-distance hires.
Caddell works all over the world across time zones. The ability to pre-build interview questions and have candidates record responses outside of my normal core business hours was crucial. With Spark Hire, a candidate could interview in Asia while I was asleep, and the interview would be delivered to my inbox first thing in the morning.
We previously used live video over Skype. I would ask questions and record responses while interviewing over Skype face-to-face (2014-2017).
We wanted to make sure we keep the best parts of our Skype functionality - being able to see and interact with candidates on video - and add the recording option. Cost was important too, and Spark Hire was competitively priced.
We ran a test with Spark Hire and several members or our team participated. We found it to be intuitive and easy to use.
The customer success team was well trained on the platform and educated us along the way. Their approach was less "Salesy", and more in-line with teaching and guiding us to use the tool. We appreciate this style a great deal.
Yes, our time to hire metric has been improved. Spark Hire estimates we saved 92 hours of work across 19 positions.
An HR team member would ask a set of interview questions and record responses in Microsoft Word over a phone interview. The first time we'd get to have a face to face with a candidate would be either over Skype or in person at our office's front desk.
For long-distance hires, our entire interview process can take place on Spark Hire. We use both one-way and live video interviews to get a read on candidates. Early on, we used Spark Hire to interview one particular candidate in Northern Michigan (we're in Central Alabama). Their video interviews led to an offer and a relocation for the candidate. Using Spark Hire, we eliminated the cost of airfare and travel for the candidate, a paramount expense. With this interview alone, our annual Spark Hire subscription paid for itself. Getting a "read" or a "feel" on a candidate prior to spending a high cost to interview face-to-face sold Spark Hire to our executive team. They're big fans of the tool, which speaks volumes considering some of our experienced leaders are less comfortable with new technology.
After the situation described above, our Sr. Technical Coordinator came and spoke to me with a smile (he doesn't smile much!), and told me he really liked the video interviews and we should keep using Spark Hire. Now, it has become a standard part of our hiring process.
Spark Hire saves time for recruiters. It's a screening tool that pays for itself with just a few hires. Also, it allows you to get a read on a candidate's proficiency with technology at an early stage.
