Goals for Video Interviewing

When Maria was beginning to start her Chick-fil-A franchise location, she knew she wanted to avoid phone screens in her hiring process. Maria knew them to be time-consuming and inaccurate to find the best candidates.

Q&A with Director of People, Maria Mallare:

Q:

What inspired you to look into video interviewing?

A:

Saving Time! It is so time consuming to phone screen candidates, so finding an affordable video interviewing software to replace that aspect of our interview process was key to efficiently identifying the right people.

Q:

Did Spark Hire replace a similar tool or is this the first time your team is using video interviewing?

A:

This is the first time our team is using video interviewing.

Q:

What criteria did you have in mind for a video interviewing solution?

A:

The video interviewing software needed to be affordable, customizable, and compatible with mobile devices.

Q:

Describe your selection process and what you found most attractive about Spark Hire when signing up.

A:

Our selection process begins with candidates filling out an application. Candidates are then screened, and two interviews are conducted. The screening aspect of our process is fulfilled seamlessly and automatically by a Spark Hire one-way interview.

Q:

What was getting started with Spark Hire like?

A:

It was so EASY! Not only was the system user friendly, but our customer success hero has been a fantastic resource from the very beginning. Within 24 hours of signing up, they were reaching out to see if I had any questions. I was quite busy and missed the first couple calls, but they were persistent in making sure we had a successful launch with Spark Hire.

After setting up, my customer success hero regularly reaches in to let us know about new features and make suggestions to improve our completion rates. Any time I have an out of the box idea, I know I can call my customer success hero to get their input and receive a response the same day.

Q:

What are some of the results you’ve seen with Spark Hire?

A:

By automating the screening process, we have saved about 8.33 hours per week. We have also found a candidate is 30% more likely to stay past 90 days if they complete a video interview as part of the hiring process.

Q:

What was your team’s hiring process prior to using Spark Hire?

A:

We did not have one, as we started using Spark Hire when our business started.

Q:

How does video interviewing fit into your hiring process?

A:

As mentioned previously, video interviewing has automated our screening step.

Q:

How do you get your team members to buy in to video interviewing?

A:

This is a tricky question for us. At first, we were frustrated so few applicants were electing to accept and complete the video interview. We have taken various efforts to set expectations with candidates about the interview steps in our hiring process and explain the advantages to video interviewing as opposed to phone screening. We have realized, though, that the candidates who are not completing the video interviews are not genuinely interested in working for our business, so we are happy to have those candidates weed themselves out at the beginning of the interview process.

Q:

What is the biggest impact that video interviewing has on your hiring process?

A:

Saving over 8 hours per week in our hiring process and improved employee retention.

Q:

What was your aha moment – the moment you knew you loved Spark Hire?

A:

When I saw a candidate complete their video interview wearing their pajamas in bed! I would have never been able to “see” their lack of professionalism had I just spoken to them on the phone.

Q:

Why should other restaurants look into video interviewing?

A:

Restaurants have a high hiring volume, typically due to high turnover. Spark Hire provides a unique solution to both these issues by automating part of the hiring process and improving retention rates. Spark Hire kills many birds with one stone!

Q:

What is your favorite aspect of video interviewing?

A:

I love how Spark Hire met all of the criteria we identified, but also improved our candidate experience. Spark Hire allows candidates to show us their personality (professionalism, facial expressions, etc.) much better than a phone screen would. From that, we are able to preliminarily see if they fit our culture.

Q:

What are some things you love about Spark Hire?

A:

Spark Hire is reasonably priced, has outstanding customer service, and saves us time!

Q:

What are three words that describe your experience working with Spark Hire?

A:

Valuable. Personal. Insightful.

Valuable- I feel Spark Hire is priced at a fair rate. Having fewer than 50 employees, we struggled to find a software that was affordable for our business. Should we obtain an additional franchise, we would definitely upgrade our package! It is also valuable in the time savings it provides.

Personal- This word defines so many aspects of Spark Hire. The ability to personalize video interviews and video messages to candidates. The type of outstanding customer service Spark Hire provides.

Insightful- There is so much additional information we are able to learn about candidates using Spark Hire for the screening step of our interview process.
